Depeche Mode is an English electronic music band formed in 1980 in Essex, England. The band is the most enduring and successful to emerge from the New Romantic and New Wave era. One of the precursors of synth pop, Depeche Mode is one of the biggest and most important representatives of electronic music, alongside Pet Shop Boys, New Order and Kraftwerk.

Over time, the band became increasingly creative, mature and well-produced, taking a huge advantage over their fellow countrymen and even over Kraftwerk himself and is now considered a huge influence for several pop bands, also having a list of illustrious fans like Marilyn Manson, Trent Reznor, Scott Weiland, Robert Smith, Tori Amos, Johnny Cash and Assemblage 23.

The group was initially formed by David Gahan (vocals), Martin L. Gore (keyboards, guitars, vocals and composer from 81), Andrew Fletcher (keyboards) and Vince Clarke (keyboards and composers from 80 to 81). Vince Clarke left the band after the release of their debut album in 1981. He was replaced by Alan Wilder, a member from 82 to 95. After Wilder's departure, Depeche Mode continued their career as a trio.

By 2006 it was estimated that the band had sold over 91 million copies worldwide (35 million singles / 56 million albums). The band has had 44 songs in the UK charts and has been in the UK top 40 more times than any other artist without reaching number one. Its greatest musical highlight is a strong depressive, romantic and epic mood, between very different arrangements that result in a unique sound. It is also recognized in part for its recording techniques and innovative use of samplers.

On May 26, 2022, Andrew Fletcher passed away at the age of 60.
