British band formed in 2002 in Birmingham, Editors were one of the main groups of the post-punk revival of the early 21st century. Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen are among the band's main influences. Its members Tom Smith (vocals/guitarist), Chris Urbanowicz (guitarist), Russ Leetch (bassist) and Ed Lay (drums) met at Staffordshire University.

Initially, the group was called Pilot, The Pride and also Snowfield. As Editors, the band released their first single, Bullets, in January 2005 on Kitchenware Records. Bullets was well publicized by British radio stations Xfm and 6 Music.

Their first album, The Back Room, came out in July 2005. Critically acclaimed, the band's debut album was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Prize. However, the award went to another debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys. In 2007, the band released An End Has a Start. The quartet's second album was also well received by critics and audiences, highlighting the singles "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors", "An End Has a Start" and "The Racing Rats".

Produced by Flood (a producer known for his work with New Order, Depeche Mode, U2, Nine Inch Nails and others), the band's third album, entitled In This Light and on This Evening, was released in 2009, featuring changes in the sound of the band, with the remarkable presence of synthesizers. Dissatisfied with the new musical direction the band followed, Chris Urbanowicz announced his departure from the group in April 2012.

Editors released their fourth album, The Weight of Your Love, in June 2013. In 2015, the group returned with In Dream, an album that features vocalist Rachel Goswell (Slowdive) on the tracks "Ocean of Night", "The Law" and "Oh My World". The group returned in 2018 with Violence. The seventh album, EBM, arrived in 2022 with the announcement of new member Benjamin John Power of the Blanck Mass project and also founder of the duo Fuck Buttons. EBM is an acronym for Editors and Blanck Mass and also a reference to Electronic Body Music's influence on the group's work.
