J Mascis was best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the influential American alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr.. Born Joseph Donald Mascis on December 10, 1965 in Amherst, Massachusetts, he broke into the American rock underground with the hardcore punk band Deep Wound, which existed between 1982 and 1984. 

In 1984, with Lou Barlow (bass) and Murph (drums), J Mascis formed Dinosaur Jr., a band that disbanded in 1997. Previously, in 1996, J Mascis released Martin + Me, his first solo album. Following the end of Dinosaur Jr., the musician dedicated himself to several projects, such as J Mascis + The Fog, a band that released the albums More Light (2000) and Free So Free (2002). 

In 2005, Mascis, Barlow and Murph returned with Dinosaur Jr.. That same year, Mascis released the album J and Friends Sing and Chant for Amma, an album with songs dedicated to the Hindu religious leader Mata Amritanandamayi (Ammachi). In 2010, J Mascis joined John Petkovic and Tim Parnin from Cobra Verde and Dave Sweetapple from Witch to form the band Sweet Apple. The following year, he released another solo album, titled Several Shades Of Why

His next solo work, Tied to a Star, came out in 2014. Mascis returned in 2018 with Elastic Days.. What Do We Do Now, a work from 2024, was well received by critics.
