The English band Muse was formed by Matthew Bellamy (vocals and guitar), Chris Wolstenholme (bass), and Dominic Howard (drums) in 1994, in the town of Teignmouth, Devon. Before adopting their final name, the trio performed as Rocket Baby Dolls. The group’s sound blends progressive rock, hard rock, glam, space rock, and electronic music.
Their debut album, Showbiz, was released in 1999. At the time, comparisons to Radiohead were inevitable: not only did Matthew Bellamy’s vocals strongly resemble those of Thom Yorke, but Muse’s compositions also bore a clear influence from the classic album OK Computer.
In 2001, the band released their second album, Origin of Symmetry. The album showed the trio attempting to step out of the shadow of their fellow Brits, though it still retained the same paranoid melancholy. Following that, as they solidified their identity and global success, came the albums Absolution (2003), Black Holes and Revelations (2006), and The Resistance (2009).
The 2nd Law, their sixth studio album, was released in September 2012. In the years that followed, the group maintained a steady pace of releases with Drones (2015), Simulation Theory (2018), and their ninth studio album, Will of the People, released in 2022.
The trio returned in June 2026 with The Wow! Signal, their tenth studio album. The album revisited Muse’s characteristic grandeur, blending progressive rock, metal, electronic music, pop, and orchestral arrangements. Inspired by space and the possibility of extraterrestrial life, the album continued the band’s recurring interest in science fiction, technology, and existential questions.
