The band The Twilight Sad was formed in 2003 in the Scottish town of Kilsyth by James Graham (vocals), Andy MacFarlane (guitar, accordion), Craig Orzel (bass), and Mark Devine (drums). Their music draws influences from genres such as shoegaze, post-rock, Krautrock, and industrial.

Associated with the English label Fat Cat Records, the band released their debut album, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, in 2007, receiving positive reviews from critics. The Twilight Sad toured Europe and the United States between 2007 and 2008. Also in 2008, the group released the compilation Killed My Parents and Hit the Road, bringing together live recordings, unreleased tracks, and covers of the songs "Twenty Four Hours" (Joy Division), "Half a Person" (The Smiths), and "Modern Romance" (Yeah Yeah Yeahs).

In 2009, the band released their second album, Forget the Night Ahead. The following year, bassist Craig Orzel left the group. No One Can Ever Know arrived in February 2012. That same year, keyboardist Martin Doherty, who accompanied the band in live performances, left to dedicate himself to his group, Chvrches.

Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave, the band's fourth album, was released in 2014. A new work, It Won/t Be Like This All the Time, arrived in 2019.
