Wednesday

Hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, the band Wednesday is led by singer, guitarist, and songwriter Karly Hartzman.

The group stands out in the alternative rock scene for its fusion of the noisy aesthetic of the 1990s with the narrative tradition of American country music—a sound often associated with the term “countrygaze” due to its blend of shoegaze and country elements.

Influenced by acts ranging from The Sundays (the inspiration for the band’s name and the contrast between delicate vocals and noise) to Swirlies, Smashing Pumpkins , Medicine, and Drive-By Truckers, the band’s sound serves as a backdrop for Hartzman’s compositions, which function as unvarnished chronicles of life in the southern United States. Her lyrics capture mundane episodes, road stories, relationships, local crimes, and eccentric characters from her hometown, shifting between humorous, unsettling, and tragic tones.

The group’s musical journey began individually with the solo release Yep Definitely (2018), evolving into the formation of a full band on the albums I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone (2020) and Twin Plagues (2021). In 2022, they released Mowing the Leaves Instead of Piling ’em Up, an album focused on covers and reinterpretations of their influences. International recognition came with the acclaimed Rat Saw God (2023), released by Dead Oceans and driven by tracks like “Bull Believer” and “Chosen to Deserve.” Later, the album Bleeds (2025) cemented the band’s place in the alternative scene with standout tracks like “Elderberry Wine” and “Townies.”

A key figure in this rise was guitarist and songwriter MJ Lenderman, who for years balanced his role in Wednesday with a highly acclaimed solo career. Lenderman actively participated in the recording of Bleeds, but after a period of intense touring and the end of his relationship with Hartzman, he confirmed in 2025 that he would perform his final show as an official member of the band.
