Bloc Party is an English indie rock band formed in London. The group’s career began in 1999, when Kele Okereke and Russell Lissack reunited at the Reading Festival after being introduced by mutual friends. With the arrival of bassist Gordon Moakes and drummer Matt Tong, the lineup solidified and adopted its final name in 2003.
Even before releasing their first LP, the quartet caught the attention of the British press with singles such as “She’s Hearing Voices,” “Banquet,” “Little Thoughts,” and “Helicopter.” Released in 2005, their debut album, Silent Alarm, established itself as one of the most influential works of the indie rock revival and post-punk revival of that decade.
In the following years, the band expanded its sound by incorporating elements of electronic music and dance rock into the albums A Weekend in the City (2007) and Intimacy (2008). During a hiatus from the band, Kele Okereke began his solo career with The Boxer (2010).
The Bloc Party returned to the scene with Four (2012), an album characterized by heavier guitar sounds. Following the departures of Matt Tong and Gordon Moakes, Okereke and Lissack restructured the band for the recording of Hymns (2016), bringing in Justin Harris on bass and Louise Bartle on drums.
In 2022, the release of Alpha Games brought back the energy and angular guitars of their early years. Following that, the band celebrated two decades of Silent Alarm with tours and special performances.
Their seventh studio album, Anatomy of a Brief Romance, was released on September 11, 2026. Produced by Trevor Horn, the album marks bassist Harry Deacon’s studio debut.
