The band Broken Social Scene was formed in 1999 in Toronto, Canada, by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, but throughout their career they became a prominent collective in the Canadian indie scene, receiving collaborations from members of bands such as Metric and Stars. Leslie Feist, Evan Cranley, Andrew Whiteman, and Justin Peroff were some of the musicians who later joined the two.

The collective's music sometimes sounds chaotic, characterized by experimental noises, but resulting in a captivating and melodic pop sound. In 2001, the band released their first album, titled Feel Good Lost.

During the recording of their second album, You Forgot It In People, Broken Social Scene grew, with six more musicians joining the group: James Shaw, Emily Haines, John Crossingham, Brill Priddle, Jessica Moss, and Jason Collett. 'You Forgot It In People' earned the band the Juno Award for Best Alternative Album of the year.

In 2005, the band released their third album, self-titled. Broken Social Scene received several positive reviews.

The band's fourth studio album was released five years later. Forgiveness Rock Record featured production by John McEntire (Tortoise). A new studio album, Hug of Thunder, was released in 2017.
