Formed in 1997 in New York, Interpol is one of the most influential bands of the early 2000s post-punk revival. Their sound combines angular guitars, prominent bass lines, and a dark atmosphere, often compared to groups such as Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Chameleons, and Television.
The original lineup consisted of Paul Banks (vocals and guitar), Daniel Kessler (guitar), Carlos Dengler (bass and keyboards), and Greg Drudy (drums). In 2000, Drudy left the band and was replaced by Sam Fogarino.
Their debut album, Turn On the Bright Lights (2002), was critically acclaimed and established the band within the New York indie scene, featuring iconic tracks such as “NYC,” “PDA,” and “Obstacle 1.”
In 2004, they released Antics, an album that expanded their international reach with hits like “Slow Hands,” “Evil,” and “C’mere.” Three years later, Our Love to Admire was released, the group’s first album on a major label.
Their fourth album, Interpol, was released in 2010. After the recording sessions, Carlos Dengler left the band, and Paul Banks took over on bass in the studio. Following a hiatus, the band returned in September 2014 with El Pintor.
In 2018, they released Marauder, produced by Dave Fridmann, followed by the EP A Fine Mess (2019), recorded during the same sessions. In 2022, they released The Other Side of Make-Believe, produced by Flood and Alan Moulder.
In August 2026, the band released its eighth studio album, This Mirror Weighs a Ton. Produced by Andrew Wyatt and mixed by Dave Fridmann, the album marked the group’s debut on Partisan Records and the official addition of session musicians Brandon Curtis and Brad Truax.
