Beggars Banquet has announced the re-release of Boces (1993), the second album by Mercury Rev. Scheduled for November 13, 2026, the reissue will be available in the United Kingdom and the European Union on black vinyl and CD, featuring audio remastered by Henry Rudkins at AIR Studios in London.
Boces was the band’s last album featuring vocalist and founding member David Baker, who left the group after the promotional tour due to tensions and creative differences with the other members. The album combines experimentation with noise, psychedelia, and pop melodies, building on the sound explored on the group’s debut, Yerself Is Steam (1991).
In the years that followed, Mercury Rev gradually shifted toward a more melodic and orchestral sound. This transition began with See You on the Other Side (1995) and was solidified on Deserter’s Songs (1998), considered one of the greatest milestones of their career. The incorporation of folk and jazz elements expanded the band’s repertoire without sacrificing the experimental spirit of their early years.
