The Eels is an American alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1995 by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, known by his stage name E. As the group’s only permanent member, Everett collaborates with various musicians in the studio and on tour.
The band’s sound spans indie rock, folk, blues, chamber pop, and electronic experimentation. His lyrics, generally introspective and marked by dark humor, address themes such as loneliness, death, romantic relationships, family trauma, and resilience.
The band debuted in 1996 with Beautiful Freak, an album that featured tracks such as “Novocaine for the Soul” and “Susan’s House.” Two years later, he released Electro-Shock Blues, an album inspired by the family losses Everett experienced and considered one of the highlights of his discography. Other notable albums include Daisies of the Galaxy (2000), Souljacker (2001), Blinking Lights and Other Revelations (2005) and The Deconstruction (2018).
In 2024, Eels released their 15th studio album, Eels Time!.
