After the dissolution of Hüsker Dü and the release of two solo albums, Bob Mould decided to form a band to, in a way, capitalize on the great moment the American rock scene was experiencing in the early 1990s. With bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis, he formed Sugar in 1992. That same year, the trio released the acclaimed album Copper Blue, which included the hits "Helpless" and "If I Can't Change Your Mind". Following this, in April 1993, came the EP Beaster, which compiled songs recorded during the Copper Blue sessions.

Despite receiving good reviews, the second album, File Under: Easy Listening (1994), did not achieve the same level of success as the first. In 1995, the band ended its activities and Bob Mould continued his solo career.
