The Organ was formed in 2001 in Vancouver, Canada, by Katie Sketch (vocals), Debora Cohen (guitar), Jenny Smyth (organ), Shelby Stocks (drums), and Sarah Efron (bass). After the release of the EP Sinking Hearts in 2002, Efron left the group and was replaced by Ashley Webber. With a sound characterized by melancholic guitars, organ lines, and restrained vocals, the band drew comparisons to acts such as The Smiths and The Cure.
In 2004, the quintet released Grab That Gun, their only studio album, on the Mint Records and 604 Records labels. Well-received on the independent circuit, the album propelled the band into the post-punk revival movement of the 2000s, driven by tracks like “Brother” and “Memorize the City.” The album’s success led the group to tour Canada, the United States, and Europe. During this period, Webber left the band and was replaced by Shmoo, Katie Sketch’s sister.
The strain of touring and internal tensions culminated in the band’s breakup, announced in December 2006. The following year, the members returned to the studio to record six remaining songs. The material was released in October 2008 on the EP Thieves, bringing the group’s discography to a close.
In 2024, 604 Records released a 20th-anniversary edition of Grab That Gun, bringing together the album and the EP Thieves on a remastered double LP.
