Mary in the Junkyard is an English experimental indie rock band formed in 2022 in London by guitarist and vocalist Clari Freeman-Taylor, drummer David Addison, and bassist and violist Saya Barbaglia.
The musical connection between the band members began before the COVID-19 pandemic, when Freeman-Taylor and Addison played in the band Second Thoughts. With the pandemic, the two limited themselves to writing songs at home. After the pandemic, the project took shape with the addition of Saya Barbaglia, with whom Freeman-Taylor had previously played in a youth orchestra years earlier.
In 2023, Mary in the Junkyard released their first single, “Tuesday,” followed by their first EP, This Old House, which was released in May 2024 and cemented the trio’s place on the London alternative scene. The following year, the band toured North America as the opening act for Wet Leg.
Released in July 2026, Role Model Hermit, their debut studio album, was well-received by publications such as NME and Pitchfork and was considered one of the most mature and creative debuts of the year in British indie rock.
