Formed in the 2000s, Tame Impala is an Australian band led by multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer Kevin Parker, who frequently plays all the instruments in recording sessions.
The group flirts with elements of psychedelic and electronic music. Their formation began in 1999 in the Australian city of Perth, when Kevin Parker (vocals, guitar) and Dominic Simper (bass) were only 13 years old and started making their first home recordings. However, the name Tame Impala was only adopted in 2007. The following year, their lineup was finalized with Jay Watson (drums, backing vocals) joining the two.
The band gained recognition through MySpace and in 2008 signed with the Australian label Modular Recordings. In the same year, the group released a self-titled EP, which was enthusiastically received by the local press. Subsequently, the band opened for artists such as The Black Keys, Yeasayer, and MGMT in shows held in Australia.
In 2009, the band played some shows in the United Kingdom. The following year, their first album, Innerspeaker, was released. With their psychedelic garage rock, heavily influenced by 1960s rock, Tame Impala was one of the most talked-about bands in 2010.
In 2012, the group released their second album, the acclaimed Lonerism. Its successor, Currents, released in 2015, was also received with critical acclaim.
The Slow Rush, the band's fourth album, arrived in 2020, followed by Deadbeat in 2025.
