The band Chico Science & Nação Zumbi was formed in Recife in the early 1990s. Before the group was formed, Chico Science had already worked with the bands Orla Orbe and Loustal, where he conducted his first musical experiments influenced by soul, funk, hip-hop, and local rhythms such as maracatu. These experiments gave rise to one of the most influential movements in Brazilian music: Manguebeat, which had Mundo Livre S/A as another of its leading representatives.
The band’s lineup included Chico Science (vocals), Jorge du Peixe (drum/alfaia), Lúcio Maia (guitar), Dengue (bass), Gilmar Bolla 8 (drum/alfaia), Toca Ogan (percussion), Gira (drums/alfaia), Marquinho (drums/alfaia), and Canhoto (snare drum), the latter later replaced by Pupillo.
In 1994, the group released its debut album, Da Lama ao Caos, which was critically acclaimed. The success continued with their second album, Afrociberdelia (1996), which demonstrated a maturing fusion of regional rhythms with international pop music.
On February 2, 1997, Chico Science died in a car accident. The following year, in 1998, the album CSNZ was released, featuring remixes, live recordings with Chico, and previously unreleased tracks with Jorge du Peixe on vocals.
With Jorge du Peixe on vocals, the Nação Zumbi continued on its path.
