Born on February 13, 1971, an American from Cincinnati, Ohio, Matthew Donald Berninger became known as the vocalist of the indie rock band The National, formed in 1999. His baritone voice is one of the main elements that marks the group's melancholy music.

In May 2020, Matt Berninger announced the release of his first solo album, Serpentine Prison.
