The English band Kula Shaker emerged in the second half of the 1990s, in the British scene labeled post-Britpop. The quartet formed by Crispian Mills (vocals, guitar), Alonza Bevan (bass), Paul Winterhart (drums) and Jay Darlington (keyboards) achieved relative success with the singles "Tattva", "Hey Dude" and "Govinda", tracks from their debut album K (1996).

The group's music was characterized by the fusion of psychedelic rock with traditional Indian music.

In March 1999, Kula Shaker released her second album, Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts. That same year, the band disbanded.

In 2006, the band returned, but without Jay Darlington. In this new phase, the group started to release albums sporadically. Then came Strangefolk (2007), Pilgrims Progress (2010), K 2.0 (2016) and 1st Congregational Church of Eternal Love and Free Hugs (2022).
