Mazzy Star

Mazzy Star emerged in the late 1980s in California from the collaboration between guitarist David Roback and singer Hope Sandoval. The two had previously played in Opal, a band Sandoval joined after vocalist and bassist Kendra Smith left.

Sandoval’s soft voice and Roback’s atmospheric guitars shaped a sound that blends folk, psychedelia, and dream pop. Their debut album, She Hangs Brightly, was released in 1990. Three years later, So Tonight That I Might See featured “Fade Into You,” the band’s best-known song. The third album, Among My Swan, was released in 1996.

After a long hiatus from releasing albums, Sandoval continued working with drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig of My Bloody Valentine, on the project Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions. Mazzy Star returned to performing new songs in 2011 with the single “Common Burn” / “Lay Myself Down,” and released their fourth album, Seasons of Your Day, in 2013.

In 2018, the group released the EP Still, their final release before David Roback’s death in February 2020 at the age of 61.
