O grupo formado em 2009 reúne quatro figuras do rock underground americano: J. Mancis (Dinosaur Jr.), John Petkovic (Death of Samantha, Guided by Voices e Cobra Verde), Tim Parnin (Cobra Verde) e Dave Sweetapple (Witch). O Sweet Apple é liderado por John Petkovic, que escreveu 25 músicas em menos de um mês, sendo que 12 foram selecionadas para o primeiro álbum, 'Love & Desperation', lançado em 2010, pelo selo Teepee Records.
'Love & Desperation' traz influência do rock dos anos 70 na música do Sweet Apple. Até a capa foi inspirada na do disco 'Country Life', de 1974, do grupo inglês Roxy Music.
Em abril de 2014 saiu o segundo álbum do grupo, 'The Golden Age of Glitter', com colaborações de Mark Lanegan, Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices), entre outros. Pollard e Lanegan também apareceram no álbum seguinte, 'Sing the Night in Sorrow', lançado em 2017.
