If ABBA brought Swedish pop to the world in the 1970s, in the 1990s The Cardigans helped revitalize that presence with a combination of catchy melodies, sophisticated arrangements, and the voice of Nina Persson. Blending indie pop, rock, and jazz influences, the band has forged an identity that goes beyond the success of its best-known singles.
Formed in Jönköping, Sweden, in 1992, the group solidified its lineup with Nina Persson on vocals, Peter Svensson on guitar, Magnus Sveningsson on bass, Bengt Lagerberg on drums, and Lars-Olof Johansson on keyboards and guitar. Their debut came with the album Emmerdale, in 1994. The following year, Life, which includes “Carnival,” expanded the band’s international reach and introduced their retro-inspired pop to a wider audience.
Their breakthrough came with their third album, First Band on the Moon (1996). The album featured “Lovefool,” whose success was fueled by its inclusion on the soundtrack to Romeo + Juliet, Baz Luhrmann’s film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. Behind the bright sound, the band was already exploring feelings and relationships that were less lighthearted than their melodies suggested.
On Gran Turismo, released in 1998, The Cardigans adopted a darker sound, with a greater presence of electronic elements. “My Favourite Game” and “Erase/Rewind” became the standout tracks. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, the music video for “My Favourite Game” featured Persson driving recklessly and causing accidents—scenes that led to broadcast restrictions and the circulation of edited versions on European channels, including MTV UK.
After this period, the band members began to focus on other projects, and Persson released the first album by A Camp. The Cardigans returned in 2003 with Long Gone Before Daylight, marked by a more organic approach and folk and country influences. Two years later, Super Extra Gravity featured a sound more oriented toward rock.
One of the band’s distinctive features lies in their reinterpretations of Black Sabbath: “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,” included on Emmerdale, and “Iron Man,” on First Band on the Moon. These covers bring the heavy metal band’s repertoire closer to the Swedish pop scene, revealing influences that aren’t always obvious upon first listen.
After another hiatus, the band resumed touring in 2012, without Peter Svensson, who was replaced on stage by guitarist Oskar Humlebo. Since then, the band has continued to perform live. In 2024, the group revisited its back catalog with The Rest of the Best, a two-volume compilation featuring B-sides, rarities, and contributions to soundtracks originally released between 1994 and 2006.
