The Brazilian band Chico Science & Nação Zumbi was formed in Recife in the early 1990s. Before forming the group, Chico Science had already worked with the bands Orla Orbe and Loustal, where he made his first musical experiments, influenced by soul, funk, hip hop, and local rhythms such as maracatu. These experiments gave rise to one of the most interesting movements in Pernambuco music, Manguebeat, which also includes the band Mundo Livre S/A as one of its main representatives.

Jorge dü Peixe (drums), Lucio Maia (guitar), Dengue (bass), Gilmar Bola 8 (drums), Toca Ogam (percussion), Gira (drums), Marquinho (drums), and Canhoto (snare drum), later replaced by Pupilo, and Chico Science formed the band, which in 1994 released its first album, Da Lama ao Caos, which received numerous critical accolades. The praise continued with their second album, Afrociberdelia, released in 1996. This album shows a maturation in the blending of regional rhythms with international pop music.

On February 2, 1997, Chico Science died in a car accident. In 1998, the album CSNZ was released, featuring some remixed songs, live versions with Chico, and unreleased tracks with Jorge Dü Peixe on vocals.

And, with Jorge Dü Peixe on vocals, Nação Zumbi continued.
