Ra Ra Riot formed in early 2006 in Syracuse, New York, USA. The band was formed at Syracuse University with Milo Bonacci (guitar), Alexandra Lawn (cello), Wesley Miles (keyboards, vocals), John Pike (drums), Mathieu Santos (bass) and Rebecca Zeller (violin). The band's eclectic music is similar to the sound of their fellow countrymen Vampire Weekend.

The group moved to New York City, where they recorded the EP Ra Ra Riot, released in 2007. That year, drummer John Pike disappeared one night and his body was found in Buzzards Bay, a bay located in the state of Massachusetts.

In 2008, Ra Ra Riot released their first album, The Rhumb Line, on the Barsuk Records label. The album received positive reviews and the band toured with Death Cab for Cutie.

The Orchard, their second album, was released in August 2010. In early 2012, Alexandra Lawn announced her departure from the band. Beta Love, their third album, was released in January 2013. A new album, titled Need Your Light, arrived in 2016. In 2019, the band released Superbloom.
