Chapterhouse

The English band Chapterhouse was formed in 1987 in Reading, in the county of Berkshire. Its original lineup consisted of Andrew Sherriff (vocals and guitar), Stephen Patman (vocals and guitar), Simon Rowe (guitar), Jon Curtis (bass), and Ashley Bates (drums). Curtis left the group in 1990 to resume his studies and was replaced by American bassist Russell Barrett.

In its early years, the group developed a psychedelic, noisy sound characterized by drones, influenced by bands such as The Stooges and Spacemen 3, a band for which they even opened a few shows. Gradually, their songs took on a more melodic and atmospheric quality, bringing the quintet closer to shoegaze, a British movement that also launched acts such as My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Lush, and Slowdive.

Following the EPs Freefall and Sunburst, both from 1990, Chapterhouse released their first album, Whirlpool, in 1991, on Dedicated Records. Later considered one of the essential works of shoegaze, the album combined dense, enveloping guitars, ethereal melodies, and rhythms that were more vigorous than those of many of the genre’s contemporaries. Its standout track was “Pearl,” a single that featured backing vocals by Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, and reached No. 67 on the UK charts. Whirlpool reached number 23 on the UK album chart.

The group returned in 1993 with Blood Music, their second and final studio album. More electronic and dance-floor oriented, the album incorporated elements of acid house, techno, and British rave culture, without completely abandoning the band’s signature layered guitar sound. Among its best-known tracks are “She’s a Vision” and “We Are the Beautiful.” Some editions included Pentamerous Metamorphosis, an album on which the duo Global Communication reimagined the album through ambient and electronic remixes.

The band concluded its first phase in 1994. Simon Rowe went on to join Mojave 3, while Ashley Bates formed Cuba and later joined the folk-electronica group Tunng. Andrew Sherriff, Stephen Patman, and Bates also pursued careers as composers and creators of soundtracks for advertising and audiovisual productions.

In 2008, the band returned to the stage to perform with German electronic music artist Ulrich Schnauss at the Truck Festival. The reunion continued with shows in London and short tours of Japan and North America in 2010. In 2023, their discography was reissued by Cherry Red Records in the six-CD box set Chronology, compiling albums, singles, B-sides, remixes, demos, and previously unreleased recordings. Two years later, the group released the EP White House Demos, revisiting their earliest recordings, made in 1989.

In 2026, Chapterhouse reunited and returned to the stage after more than 15 years.
