Emerging in the early 1990s from the Los Angeles alternative rock scene, Grant Lee Buffalo brought an original style that, with memorable songs, won over critics and earned praise from bands like R.E.M.. Their music carried a notable country influence, addressing political and social issues in their lyrics.
With Paul Kimble (bass) and Joey Peters (drums), Grant-Lee Phillips (vocals, guitar) formed Grant Lee Buffalo in 1991 after the end of his previous project, Shiva Burlesque, a group that released two albums: Shiva Burlesque (1987) and Mercury Blues (1990).
In 1992, the band released their first single, "Fuzzy," which gave its title to their first album, released the following year by Slash Records. Subsequently, the band embarked on a tour that included opening for Paul Westerberg and Pearl Jam.
Mighty Joe Moon, the acclaimed second album by Grant Lee Buffalo, arrived in 1994. The video for the single "Mockingbirds" received significant airplay on MTV in the US. Rolling Stone magazine named Grant-Lee Phillips vocalist of the year. Around this time, the group also toured with R.E.M..
Subsequently, the band released the albums Copperopolis (1996) and Jubilee (1998), which received positive reviews but lacked commercial success. The following year, the trio disbanded.
After the group's end, Grant-Lee Phillips began his solo career.
