American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Julien Rose Baker was born on September 29, 1995, in Germantown, in the Memphis area of Tennessee. Her musical journey began in high school, when she formed the band The Star Killers, later renamed Forrister. At the same time, she began writing the songs that would launch her solo career.
After releasing her first recordings on Bandcamp, she released her debut album, Sprained Ankle, in October 2015, on 6131 Records. With minimalist arrangements and confessional lyrics, the album caught the attention of music critics and showcased an artist capable of transforming intimate experiences into songs with a powerful emotional impact.
Her second album, Turn Out the Lights, was released in 2017 by Matador Records, expanding on the sound of her debut without losing its intimate atmosphere. In 2018, Baker joined forces with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus to form boygenius, a trio that released a self-titled EP that same year.
On Little Oblivions, her third solo album (2021), the singer expanded her arrangements by incorporating drums, bass, and keyboards, bringing her compositions closer to a fuller indie rock sound.
With boygenius, she released The Record in 2023. The album cemented the trio’s international reputation, earning them three awards at the 2024 Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Music Album (The Record), as well as Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for “Not Strong Enough.”
In April 2025, Baker released Send a Prayer My Way, an album in collaboration with TORRES. Released by Matador Records, the project explores country music from a queer perspective, bringing together stories of love, desire, regret, and resistance.
