Mojave 3

The band Mojave 3 was formed in 1995 by Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell, former members of Slowdive, shortly after the band broke up. Shortly thereafter, drummer Ian McCutcheon joined the duo in their new project, which adopted a more acoustic and melancholic sound, incorporating elements of folk, alternative country, and dream pop. The group moved away from the dense walls of distorted guitars characteristic of shoegaze, the genre that defined Slowdive’s early career.

Still in 1995, the trio released their debut album, Ask Me Tomorrow, on the 4AD label. Composed of slow, nostalgic folk songs, the album was compared to the work of artists such as Nick Drake, Cowboy Junkies, and Mazzy Star.

After the release of their first album, Simon Rowe (formerly of Chapterhouse) and Alan Forrester joined the band. As a quintet, Mojave 3 released four more studio albums: Out of Tune (1998), Excuses for Travelers (2000), Spoon and Rafter (2003), and Puzzles Like You (2006).

Mojave 3’s most recent activities took place in 2011, when the band returned to the stage after a hiatus that began in 2008.

In 2014, Slowdive reunited, kicking off the second phase of their career. Since then, Mojave 3 has remained on hiatus indefinitely.
