The Primitives

The British indie pop band The Primitives was formed in 1984 in Coventry, England, by Keiron McDermott (vocals), Paul Court, also known as PJ Court (guitar and vocals), Steve Dullaghan (bass), and Pete Tweedie (drums). McDermott was later replaced by Tracy Tracy, whose voice became one of the group’s trademarks. In 1987, Tig Williams took over on drums, replacing Tweedie. Combining pop melodies, noisy guitars, and punk energy, the band made a name for itself on the British indie scene.

Following their first singles — including “Thru the Flowers,” “Really Stupid,” and “Stop Killing Me” — the group released their debut album, Lovely, in 1988. The album reached number six on the British charts and featured “Crash,” their biggest hit, which peaked at number five on the UK singles chart and propelled the band to international fame.

In late 1988, after a tour of the United States, Dullaghan left the group. With Paul Sampson on bass, The Primitives released Pure in 1989. The second album peaked at number 33 on the UK charts, though it did not match the commercial success of their debut. In 1991, Galore, their third studio album, was released. The following year, the band disbanded.

The death of Steve Dullaghan in 2009 prompted the band members to reunite for a tribute concert in Coventry later that year. The warm reception to their return led to a UK tour in 2010, followed by shows in the United States and continental Europe.

Back in the studio, the group released the EP Never Kill a Secret in 2011, featuring two previously unreleased songs and two re-recordings. The EP paved the way for Echoes and Rhymes, released by Elefant Records in 2012. On this album, the band revisited little-known recordings, mainly from the 1960s, originally performed by female singers and groups.

In October 2014, The Primitives released Spin-O-Rama, their first album of original material since Galore. They followed that up with the 2017 EP New Thrills and the 2022 single “Don’t Know Where to Start.”
