Veronica Falls

The English indie pop band Veronica Falls was formed in London in 2009 by Roxanne Clifford and James Hoare (both on vocals and guitar), Marion Herbain (bass), and Patrick Doyle (drums and backing vocals). Clifford and Doyle had previously played together in the Scottish bands The Royal We and Sexy Kids, while Hoare had been a member of Your Twenties.

With reverberating guitars, vocal harmonies, and melodies that contrasted with dark lyrics, the group drew on elements of 1980s British indie pop and the C86 movement. Among their influences were The Velvet Underground, Beat Happening, girl groups of the 1960s, and The Wedding Present. Their music was also frequently associated with bands such as The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Vivian Girls, Dum Dum Girls and Beach Fossils.

In 2010, Veronica Falls released the singles “Found Love in a Graveyard” and “Beachy Head” on the U.S. label Captured Tracks. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2011 by Slumberland Records in the United States and by Bella Union in Europe. The album featured the collaboration of veteran producer and sound engineer Guy Fixsen, known for his work with artists such as My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, The Sundays and The House of Love.

In February 2013, the band released their second album, Waiting for Something to Happen. Produced with Rory Attwell, the album retained the quartet’s signature crystal-clear guitars and harmonies, standing out in melodically refined songs such as “Teenage” and “If You Still Want Me.”

Veronica Falls informally disbanded around 2014 without officially announcing their breakup. Roxanne Clifford went on to develop the synthpop project Patience, while James Hoare joined bands such as The Proper Ornaments and Ultimate Painting. Patrick Doyle pursued a solo career under the name Boys Forever and passed away in 2018 at the age of 32.
