Horsegirl is an American band formed in 2019 in the city of Chicago, Illinois, by young women Penelope Lowenstein (vocals, guitar), Nora Cheng (vocals, guitar) and Gigi Reece (drums). When they released their first album, the well-received Versions of Modern Performance, the trio drew attention mainly for evoking the alternative music that boomed in the first half of the 1990s. There are elements that refer to the works of artists such as Dinosaur Jr., Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, or artists who emerged in the 2000s like Electrelane, in the girls' music.
Prior to their debut album, the band had released theBallroom Dance Scene EP on the Sonic Cathedral Recordings label in 2021. Also in 2021, Horsegirl signed to Matador Records. Subsequently, the trio began working with producer John Agnello, known for his work with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile, among others. The aforementioned Versions of Modern Performance was released in June 2022.
