Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan

In April 2004, Scottish singer-songwriter Isobel Campbell, a former member of Belle and Sebastian, released the EP Time Is Just the Same, which featured American artist Mark Lanegan, former lead singer of Screaming Trees. The album marked the beginning of a collaboration that would span three albums.

The first of these, Ballad of the Broken Seas, was released in 2006 and was nominated for that year’s Mercury Prize. The combination of Campbell’s delicate voice and the deep timbre of Lanegan became the defining feature of the project.

The duo worked together again on Sunday at Devil Dirt, released in 2008, and concluded the trilogy with Hawk, from 2010. These three albums cemented the partnership as one of the most remarkable in folk and alternative rock of the 2000s.

Mark Lanegan died in February 2022 at the age of 57. Subsequently, the albums recorded with Campbell were reissued, keeping the duo’s legacy alive.
