Bat for Lashes is the stage name of English singer and songwriter Natasha Khan, born on October 25, 1979. Her voice has been compared to singers such as Björk and Siouxsie Sioux. Tori Amos, Kate Bush and Fiona Apple are also other references.
Natasha Khan has a degree in music and visual arts. At university, her experimental work was influenced by artists such as Steve Reich and Susan Hiller. She produced multimedia work focusing on sound installations, animations and performances. The material that makes up her first album was written when Natasha Khan was a primary school teacher.
The first single released by Bat for Lashes was "The Wizard", which was released in digital format by the record label Drowned in Sound Records and on seven inches (compact) by her own label, She Bear Records. The singer then signed a contract with Echo Records, through which she released her first album, Fur and Gold, in September 2006. The following year, she signed with Parlophone Records. Fur and Gold was re-released with bonus tracks. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize, but the award went to Klaxons, for their album Myths of the Near Future.
In 2009, Bat for Lashes released her second album, entitled Two Suns. Her third, The Haunted Man, arrived in 2012. In 2016, the singer released The Bride, a concept album about a woman whose fiancé was killed in an accident on the way to her wedding. Lost Girls, her fifth album, was released in 2019. The Dream of Delphi is a work from 2024.
