Formed in 1992 in England by Justine Frischmann (a former member of Suede and Brett Anderson’s ex-girlfriend), the alternative rock and Britpop band Elastica settled on its final lineup in early 1993, consisting of Justine Frischmann (vocals and guitar), Donna Matthews (guitar and vocals), Annie Holland (bass), and Justin Welch (drums).
In November 1993, the band released its debut single, “Stutter,” which received widespread acclaim from music critics and heavy airplay on BBC Radio 1, boosting the group’s visibility on the British indie scene.
Their self-titled debut album, Elastica, released in March 1995, reached the top of the UK charts and became, at the time, the fastest-selling debut album in British music history. However, their success was accompanied by accusations of plagiarism as early as 1995. The post-punk band Wire filed a lawsuit against the group, alleging the unauthorized use of elements from “Three Girl Rhumba” and “I Am the Fly” in the tracks “Connection” and “Line Up,” respectively. Around the same time, members of The Stranglers also pointed out similarities between “2 Minutes 52 Seconds” and the hit “No More Heroes.” The copyright disputes were settled out of court through financial settlements.
In August 1995, bassist Annie Holland left the band due to exhaustion and repetitive strain injury (RSI) caused by intense touring, and was temporarily replaced by Sheila Chipperfield. Guitarist Donna Matthews left the group for good in late 1998. In 1999, Annie Holland returned to Elastica to join the band’s new phase.
The second album, The Menace, took a long time to complete and was released in August 2000. The album did not achieve the same commercial success as their debut. Elastica officially disbanded in October 2001, marked by the release of their farewell single, “The Bitch.”
