The Icelandic experimental pop band Múm was formed in 1997 by Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason. The following year, twin sisters Gyða Valtýsdóttir and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir joined the group, which released its first album, titled Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK, in 2000. That same year, Gyða and Kristín appeared on the cover of Belle & Sebastian's album Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant.

Finally We Are No One, their second album, arrived in 2002. After this release, Gyða left the band.

In 2004, Múm released Summer Make Good. Two years later, Kristín also left the group.

Reformed, the band subsequently released the albums Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy (2007) and Sing Along to Songs You Don't Know (2009).

Múm released their sixth album, Smilewound, in September 2013, marking the return of Gyða Valtýsdóttir to the group. After a long hiatus from releasing new music, the band returned in 2025 with History of Silence.
